Argh, I was scoring a student placement test during the Oath of Office and the speech. Student X, WHY mst you ALWAYS take up twenty times as long as everyone else, and then defer your decision AGAIN, and then get angry with me when your options have narrowed? Next term I am not putting up with this. Neither is the Registrar.

Anyway ...the rest of the time I have been listening to the radio coverage. All I can say is YES!!! And please, let everyone work together. I know the shiny will be off soon enough. I am not waiting for, as xstinebee said, my box of puppies and rainbows. But looking at the faces of my students, of the Target clerk when I said, "THIS is a GOOD day," of the people in my neighborhood who have been walking oh, just a little straighter since 11/04 .... Please, let's start from there and end in triumph for all of us.

This is reposted from a comment I made on txanne's journal about the recent discussions of racism and privilege. The discussion -- largely substantive and thoughtful, and uncomfortable in the way that means growth is happening--has been making me think a good bit.

In my history class last term we were talking about imperialism and colonialism, and I was trying to get my students to comprehend why many Europeans and Americans could not only accept colonial justifications, but do so thinking they truly were doing a good thing. (I pointed out that comprehending why someone thought something was not the same thing as agreeing with those ideas or personally accepting them, but that figuring out past world-views and perspectives is an important part of historical practice.)

Uniformly, of course, the students were scornful. Imposing one's perspective on people of another country and ethnicity was just wrong and had to have been done with full knowledge of how self-serving it was. So I asked them -- many of them current or ex-military (themselves or their spouses) -- if it was right to spread democracy throughout the Middle East by invading Iraq. "Yes, of course!" said most. "They're so backward--look at how they treat women, and they need better medical care, and ...." "No, it was oil," said a couple, but others said, "Yes, we have to keep the Muslim terrorists from hurting good Christians." (I am not joking about this response. I wanted to ask whether it was okay to hurt bad Christians, but mercifully put a brake on my mouth.) One woman looked troubled, and she said that *she* was a Muslim, and wasn't a terrorist. The group worried about "Muslim" terrorists said that of course *she* wasn't bad, but that "they" were out to get "us."

I let it run on for a while, and then asked them how thinking that Western ideas about democracy and human interaction, medicine, and law were superior to Middle Eastern practices was different from being a nineteenth century person convinced that European morals, laws, medicine, and social practices were superior to those of other people? One group just said that there was a clear difference, and only liberals couldn't see it. A larger group thought for a moment, and then looked rueful, saying that they weren't liberal but that they couldn't see much of a difference; and the two groups argued for a bit about whether there was a dividing line between imperialism and "making the world safe for democracy" or not (they concluded very reluctantly that no, there wasn't.) So then I gave them a quick and dirty history of imperialism in the Middle East, and asked if the issue was Islam or extremism or continuing covert imperialism, and they debated that. I pointed out some of the ways that current media employ gendered language (and age-related language) to belittle Iraqis, compared that to the language nineteenth and twentieth century dominant cultures used to talk about members of other cultures, and quoted "Darlin' Cora" to them ("Been working for my pay for a long, long time -- why does he still call me "boy?")

This is a very long anecdote to illustrate how far everyone has to go, as well as how insidious racial issues are. Privileged white internet chick that I am, I am aware of being othered because of my gender, but I can be blind to the ways I replicate that othering to members outside the dominant culture. But some of those people replicate that othering to people outside their religion or world view, and are blind to that. Is "us" versus "them" hardwired into our brains? If it is, that isn't an excuse. It means we have even more of a responsibility to keep on being aware and to change our behavior, but it also means that nobody automatically gets the moral high ground.

I should add that descriptions of discussions always leave out the awkward places where nobody says anything, or where people are thinking out loud, or don't get my question; they leave out the places where I was confusing, spoke too soon, or (metaphorically) shoved rather than nudged and guided. In other words, just a bunch of adults, a largely black class and one privileged white chick sitting on her desk at the front, kicking around an idea and trying not to let the walls we create like race, gender, even not-so-invisible professorial authority kill that idea. (One of the things I do the first day of class is ask why they are there, and say that "because I had to" is a legitimate answer. The first person to say it always looks a little shamefaced, and I grin, and by the end of it they've figured out that they *can* tell me they hate history and I won't get pissy and hold it against them. I hope that sets the tone for the rest of class, and it usually does--they'll tell me when they think I'm full of it (the first time tentatively, and more boldly when I don't get mad), but I am not so naive as to think it eliminates all power imbalances.

"...[One] version of the American Dream emphasizes talent and effort. It favors freedom and opposes government regulation. And it belongs to the Republican Party.
"Democrats have another version of the American Dream: Everyone who works hard and behaves responsibly can achieve a decent standard of living. ... still, more and more people achieved this dream between 1945 and 1970, so the Democratic version of the American Dream had broader appeal than the Republican version, in which a smaller number of people could get much richer.
"Since the early 1970s, however, all that has changed.
"The American economy has been under siege. Real per-capita disposable income has continued to grow, but the average annual increase has fallen, from 2.7 percent between 1947 and 1973 to 1.8 percent between 1973 and 2005. ....
"What transformed the political landscape was not the slowdown in growth, but the distributional change that accompanied it. From 1947 to 1973, the purchasing power of those in the bottom 95 percent of the income distribution rose at the same rate as per capita disposable income, about 2.7 percent a year. Among the families in the top 5 percent, the growth rate was 2.2 percent. From 1973 to 2006, however, the average annual increase in the purchasing power of the bottom 95 percent was only .6 percent. The top five percent, in contrast, managed to maintain annual growth of 2.0 percent, which was almost the same as what they enjoyed before 1973.
"That's a lot of numbers, but what my students at the Kennedy School call the "take-away" is pretty simple: After 1973, when economic growth slowed, America had a choice. We could have tried to share the pain equally by maintaining the social contract under which living standards had risen at roughly the same rate among families at all levels. Or we could have treated the slowdown in growth as evidence that the Democratic version of the American Dream didn't work, and that we should try the Republican version, in which we all look out for ourselves, some people get rich, and most get left behind.
"We chose the Republican option."

The author continues by pointing out that members of both parties supported the switch, largely because of emphasis on "skill-biased technological change" as the basis of economic inequality. He argues that it was at base a correct claim, but that more analysis was needed to keep the basic charge (we need more skilled workers) from being misleading. He points to the stagnation of workers' education since 1973 and the growth of available unskilled labor, both of which put a squeeze on available jobs for the average worker. As a country we neither encouraged education or unionization, nor protected these people's incomes.

Increasing worker education is a form of regulating the economy, Jencks admits, which is something many people are reluctant to do because they argue that it keeps job growth slow and costs high. Jencks points to governmental growth statistics which show the annual growth is only 1/10 a point higher than in countries which do regulate the economy as Germany, France, and other countries do. However, regulation has come to be seen as synonymous with "poorly thought out rules" which achieve the opposite effect of their goals.

Neither dream, Jencks concludes, can be maintained. We could have made a go of the Democratic dream, but no longer. "They both focus heavily on income and material consumption. The idea that we can keep raising our material standard of living without making most of the planet too hot for human habitation is, I think, mistaken. Even the idea that we have 20 or 30 years to make the necessary adjustments appears wrongheaded.

"So I'm afraid reinventing the American Dream really means trying to wean ourselves from the illusion that we all need and deserve more stuff. If we are to survive, we need a different definition of progress. That definition will need to focus on human needs like physical health, material security, individual freedom, and time to play with our children and smell the roses.
"I'm not saying that material goods are unimportant. People need food to sustain them, a home in which they can afford to live until they die, and medical advice when they are sick. But I'm not sure people my age (71) need a million dollar machine to keep us alive another year or two. And I am quite sure that most of us could live without 85 percent of the stuff we buy in places other than grocery stores and gas stations.
"An American Dream that doesn't destroy the planet will have to involve a more-equal distribution of basic material goods. It will also have to involve more emphasis on the quality of the services we consume than on the quality of our possessions. Perhaps most important, it will have to involve more emphasis on what we can do for others and less emphasis on what we can get for ourselves.
"There's just one small problem. I have no idea how to get from here to there. That makes me a pessimist."

(There are a number of recordings; the one I know is the recording Beverly Sills made of Lucia di Lammermoor, in which she did the Mad AScene not with the customary flute, but with the armonica, and at times you could not tell which was voice and which was instrument.)

January 1 "Bead Porn"

Please ignore the nasty bead release in the holes (that white tunnel). My sister can't find the small reamer that will remove all that stuff. Count it as educational: if you are in a bead show, or a place like Hobby Lobby or Michaels, and you see this whitish stuff in the beads, run away fast and buy from someone else. Yes, yes, yes, when I get home I will clean these and repost pictures.

These are "faux boro"--"soft glass" that acts like the swirls of borosilicate, or "hard" glass (one brand name is Pyrex). Believe it or not, the base of each bead is black, and the stringer is made from handpulled brown and iris gold frit. There is no blue, purple, or green glass in any of these beads.

frostfirega asked a good question in her Word Press Blog: Where is Christmas? She noted that this year, all she had seen were frenzied shoppers, desperate for the Perfect Thing to make a Perfect Christmas. What she had not seen were lots of wishes for "Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards Men." And you know, now that she mentioned it, I think she's right. I haven't seen a lot of that, either here in SA and definitely not in Atlanta.

Eliminating the wish for peace and good will isn't really an appropriate response to cultural diversity, as nearly every major religion professes peace and some form of good will. I'm all for saying "Happy Holidays" -- especially in a neighborhood like mine, more people are likely to be preparing for Eid or, long range, Tet, than Christmas. In other sections of Atlanta, people are as likely to have finished celebrating Hanukkah earlier in the month as they are to be living in the Twelve Days of Christmas. Ironically, in genuinely multicultural neighborhoods nobody cares what you say--most people seem to be happy that someone else is celebrating something, and general good wishes for peace and good will seem appropriate for everyone. One newcomer to Atlanta, according to NPR, is Muslim, and celebrating Christmas just to share her joy of making it to the US with her neighbors. If only they would celebrate Eid with her ... THEN we'd be making progress to a peaceful world.

Instead, what I have seen waver between an emphasis on Christmas as a gift-giving, party-going, shoppingShoppingSHOPPING season, and aggressively religious greetings. I've heard several snarled, emphasized, almost shouted "Merry CHRISTMAS!!" responses to folks who say "Happy Holidays." To at least one I interjected sweetly that I didn't think the original well wisher had wanted to assume that the other person celebrated Hanukkah. The clerk just looked blank. After all, I added, didn't Jesus wish peace and love to humankind, not just American Christians? He didn't wish them to people who are making WAR ON CHRISTMAS! the clerk replied.

I gave up. I don't like living in a war zone when one truly doesn't exist. I went back to celebrating my holiday, happily, and being pleased that many other people had holidays to celebrate, too, and left the clerk in her state of war.

Charles de Lint has pointed out that as a culture we find it easier to concentrate on the terrible side of the magical and mystical--the vampires, the evil werewolves (Remus and Vivian and Blondin et al excluded), the dark forces in cities. But what grows is what we feed, which is what the Cherokee also say. So, therefore, if we believe in (even just by reading about it) the dark, we have a responsibility to nourish ALL of it--the light, the wild, EVERYTHING. Another take on that: C. S. Lewis. Part of the joy now is knowing that suffering--death and loss--comes later. Turn that one around--there IS the darkness, so to make it bearable and to triumph through it, you should let yourself have the joy, too.

And one way of doing that is by looking at what other religions celebrate--PEACE--and reinforcing THAT in our thoughts, not just looking at what many religions (Christianity included) breed--fanaticism unto violence. We would be blind indeed to ignore the dark side of religious fanaticism, but, pace De Lint, let's also take the good--peace to earth, good will towards humankind, ALL of us. Thoughts can be a powerhouse of energy, after all--what should we be thinking about and encouraging, violence and hatred or peace and goodwill?

Okay, enough confused long winded rambling.

So we rushed over to Schwartz center to rehearse ... and sat, and sat, and sat. The food was good, but we were sitting. My box of sin--i.e. my jewelry stash for sale--got a minor workout, though! That's a good argument for taking it any my sale book with me wherever I go, particularly around Christmas. One of the Rosin Sisters (formerly the Elders of "Rising Appalachia and the Elders") bought two earring sets and a pendant, and her husband (SHHHH!) is reserving a bracelet. We never did get called, though; the sound check was turning up problems, and finally we all were sent home. Before I left, though, we ran through "Light of the Stable" with John Maschinot, the Rosin sisters, Lisa Edwards, and those of us who were left. On my way out, I ran into Alison Brown and Joe Cragan, who were teaching the "Whoville Song" to a very bemused Irish fiddler, who was wondering how it fit into the Celtic spirit. I couldn't enlighten him, but we all had fun singing it until he sort of got it. Alison is so down to earth; it sort of knocks the wind out of saying, in an awe-struck voice, "Yeah, S and I jammed with Alison Brown...." :) :) :)

remember back in August that lampworking forum kerfluffle in which I was involved? They're at it again -- the owner's paranoia is incredible. Back in August I had posted the following post:

My laptop just logs in as Molly, and I forget sometimes (like seven times) that it's still there. I've already asked DaBoss to get rid of "Mincot," and he did; Boss, sugar, will you delete Molly T., too? It's too confuzzling and confusing for ME, let alone anyone else.

Well, Chad ("Boss") has only just now figured out that "Molly T." and "Mirella" are the same person, and he thinks I created her as a stealth ID. I will freely admit to using Molly to check on the forum after I was banned, mostly because there's a really nasty fight going on in the lampworking world, with fault on both sides. Our new forum was thankfully staying completely out of it. One of the people on the forum was the primary participant, but nobody responded to his posts, and as he put them in the one section of the forum where posts "flush" after a week, they disappeared. I did want to check on what the other side was saying, however, particularly as there was some confusion--I was getting emails meant for another forum member and I needed to clear that up; Molly's last login was over a week ago and I have not been back. But I figured that that was fair enough--after all, I had openly and honestly said on the board, in a post any member can find (and which I have a copy of on MY computer in case it goes bye bye), claimed the name. However, I am told--I haven't seen--that Chad has apparently made a large announcement that he has "discovered" Molly T through his Mad Computer Skillz. Pretty good sleuthing, there, all he had to do was go back through Molly's old posts. *eye roll*.

If Mirella got an email meant for Andrea Jane then that means that Andrea Jane didn't get the information Boss wanted her to have.

That means Andrea Jane couldn't come here and speak her mind the way Boss invited her to. Now Boss knows he made a mistake and can send the mail to Andrea Jane . So I think Kim did the right thing.

If he sent the mail deliberately to Mirella then that would mean that Andrea Jane wouldn't answer because she wouldn't know, but then we could all blame her for not showing up. I don't think Boss would do that do you?

People can boycott whoever they want to, I guess. A bike shop I go to was advertising in a white supremacy magazine, and I boycotted them when I found out. I sent them a letter saying why, and I signed it. They can advertise wherever they want to; it's a free country. I can boycott them, and spend my money other places. It's a free country. The bike shop kept on avertising in that magazine, and I haven't gone back.

Sending a threatening, anonymous note? That's not using consumer rights. That's being cowardly and totally not cool.

FWIW, sugar, I hate seeing this kind of division, too. I've stood up for Oops when she was being unjustly accused, and I've said I agreed with her, not just thought it, because we *are* so often at odds that I think it's good to be honest, also, about when we aren't. We ARE all one community. I may not like someone particularly well, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to potshot everything he or she says just because he or she is saying it. Hell, I've even agreed -- once --- with something the Current Occupant says, though it damn near killed me to admit it.

The one disingenuous thing I posted was the post that called attention to the difference between "Andrea Jane" and "Mirella," (two different people; AJ = Andrea Land, in Chicago, who has never made her identity secret, and Mirella is of course me, in Georgia.

First off, I figured checking on TAM as Molly was fine--I had already said clearly and openly who Molly was. If Chad didn't ban the ID, then that was his lookout. He is, after all, the same person who refuses to remove my email from his server despite formal requests to do so. Secondly, if asked by anyone, I would have, and do, say that I am Molly.

However, the nasty thing is that he is also apparently accusing "Molly"--i.e. me--of ALSO being two other people of whom I've never heard. I have no clue who they are save that apparently they use the same public internet proxy I do. *rolls eyes* I've got some suspicions about Chad's logins on our board--several come from his own server--but as long as he isn't hurting anything or being a pain, I'm not saying a word. He wants to check in? Fine. As for shit-stirring, between prepping class, working on five academic committees, strategic goals, prepping for a show, new classes, trying to start a writing schedule, and other stuff, stirring shit for real is not my interest or goal. Anyone on that board who searches for Molly T will see neutral posts, as you can see above.

I certainly don't mind Chad removing Molly--after all, I asked him to do so waaaaay back in August. I do, however, mind being accused of doing things I have not done, and stirring shit under multiple IDs and plotting against TAM (who the hell CARES?) are two things that I have not done. On the other hand, apparently in that fight I succeeded in saying a few home truths to Chad, enough that now he thinks I am the leader of the Axis of Evil and the Fountain of All Bad Things. It's lots more power than I have or bother with, but I guess I just loom large in Chad's mind. Mind you, when they say that one should make a difference I don't think board fights were what "they" (whoever the ubiquitous "they" are) had in mind. But apparently I did get Chad thinking, and while he shouts loudly about winning, I think his continuing (apparently) obsession with me speaks more loudly still.

Anyone in the Georgia area, my friend Julia and I will have a booth at the Down the Street Bead Show at the Cobb Galleria on the 17th and 18th, the weekend before Thanksgiving. Come, shop, get presents for people!

I'm selling fan pulls and bead sets, but I am also (GULP!) making my first foray into higher-priced pure sterling jewelry. Here's one of the pieces I have finished, behind the cut. It's not the best picture; the beads aren't quite as umber as that in spots, but this is a fast 5 minute snap.

What do you think? Is it just right on the simple and elegant side, or does it need bling and dangles? Or would that bee too much? Keeping in mind that this is 100% handmade using only sterling silver findings and wire, and that the lampwork beads have silver on them, how much would you be willing to pay, assuming you had da cash? My computer program says $135-$195 -- too high? Just right? Too Low? Goldilocks wants to know!

Feh. All hail the woman who went ballistic in Comcast's office the other day.

Meanwhile, I bought the amount of candy my neighbors suggested and only one child came to the door. What am I going to do with all this crap? If I keep the chocolate around, I *will* eat it. Time for donations to local shelters or something.

Back to the laundry ... my comforter was grungy and I was too sleepy to change it last night, so I figured that up-and-down with kids would be good for up and down with the laundry, but then there was no up and down with the kids, so I keep forgetting the laundry. Time to go put in another load.

Oh, and I need to find the phone. Happy HAlloween, peeps.

Rehearsal tonight went reasonably smoothly despite my lack of practice, and we'll be starting Celtic Christmas Concert rehearsals on Sunday. What IS it with men in this town? In Austin they all turned out to sing early music, but here you have to pry and prod them, and PRAY that you get one or two who will stay. I don't know if they're all singing in church, or they think people will find early music less than manly, or WHAT.
